Coimbatore, the Manchester of South, also known as "Kovai" is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu and one of the fastest growing cities in India. Situated at the foothills of Nilgiris with a pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise. Coimbatore is the administrative headquarters of Coimbatore District. It is the second most industrialized district in the State after Chennai.

Coimbatore city is spread over an area of 254 square kilometres and comprises a population of 1.5 million people (2001 census) Coimbatore is located on the Noyal River & 480 km south-west of Chennai on the NH-47. Surrounded by the Nilgiris on the northwest and Anaimalai and Palani ranges in the south, this city has a moderate climate. Coimbatore is an important cotton producing area. Surrounding hills produce coffee, tea and timber including sandalwood and teak.

Many Air Lines like Air India, Jet Airways, Paramount, Kingfisher, SPICE JET, Air Deccan, GOAir, etc. connect Coimbatore with the metros viz. Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and also overseas cities like Sharjah, Singapore, Colombo.
The city is also connected by train to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Cochin and Bengaluru. Several inter-state buses ply between Coimbatore and other cities.

In spite of its prominence as a bustling industrial city, Coimbatore still remains one of the most pollution-free cities in India. The city houses different types of industries. The major industries include Cotton spinning, textiles, textile machinery, automobile spares, motors, electronics, M/c Tool, foundries. Tiruppur - neighbouring town has carved a niche for itself in the garments market. The city is also known for its educational institutions and hospitals.
